A unique scholarship for farmers of vision
The decisions for the future of agriculture are not taken at a desk – the future develops where courageous farmers are prepared to think outside the box. This is exactly what the Nuffield Farming Scholarship offers: a global research journey that combines knowledge, networks and new perspectives. In 2022, the renowned programme was also launched in Germany - and already now it is changing careers and farms.
A journey that broadens horizons
Imagine: You immerse yourself in the world's most exciting agricultural markets. You visit innovative farms in Australia, talk to robotics experts in the USA, explore water management systems in Israel or find out how farmers in South America deal with climatic challenges. You are not just a spectator, but right in the thick of it - and learn directly from the best of the sector.
This is exactly what Meinke Ostermann, Olivia Eberwein and Jenny Matthiesen have already experienced. They are the first three German Nuffield Farming Scholarship holders of Nuffield Farming Germany e.V. Meinke from Lower Saxony was the first scholarship holder in 2023/2024 and researched how technology and robotics can revolutionise arable farming of the future.In 2024/2025, Olivia, farm manager in Brandenburg, is looking for alternative arable farming strategies for poorly structured soils.Jenny, a plant breeding expert and current 2025/2026 scholarship holder, is analysing how organic farming can become more efficient all over the world. Their findings? Valuable for their own farms - and for the sector as a whole.
What is behind the Nuffield Farming Scholarship?
The Nuffield Farming Scholarship is much more than a traditional training programme. It is a globally recognised programme for farmers, professionals and agribusiness owners between the age of 25 and 45 who are ready to develop their skills and bring new ideas to their farm.25,000US dollars in funding, an intensive research journey of at least 12 weeks to several countries and a unique network of over 2,000 alumni worldwide - that's what Nuffield Farming offers.
The scholarship starts with an international conference where all new scholarship holders worldwide meet. After that, the individual research trip begins: first with other scholarship holders to preselected destinations, then on their own. Within the scope of the application process, each participant chooses an agriculturally relevant topic to investigate while travelling. The collected findings are summarised in a report at the end and shared with the whole sector.
