Quality is not a coincidence

by Arne Gejl, WekoAgro Machinery, Denmark

One of the biggest contractors in Denmark, Skamstrup Maskinstation & Entreprenør, is situated in the South of Jutland. The region is characterised by the highest density of dairy cows in the whole country. The company, thus, is providing the corresponding complete range of tasks.

The main target group of the contractor are dairy farms. They are provided with the whole range of services. One of the largest customers is a farm with 2,000 dairy cows and 500 ha maize for silage. In this region, even an average dairy farm milks about 1,000 dairy cows.
Torben Kamp, the owner of Skamstrup Maskinstation & Entreprenør, was a dairy farmer himself. He, of course, benefits from the knowledge gathered during this time. The Kamp family farm has always been a dairy farm that, in addition, carried out contracting work for the neighbours. Torben trained as a farmer and in 1997 took over the family farm. And he kept up the double-track strategy his father took. But already at that time Torben had an objective for the future: the contracting sector was to be extended.

In 2008 he had the chance to do exactly this: Torben Kamp was offered to take over the renowned contracting company Skamstrup Maskinstation. The former owner, Hans Larsen, attached major importance to selling Samstrup only to someone who would continue the company in his spirit and keep up the excellent reputation his company had achieved over the years.
Torben Kamp was known as a man in rubber boots and overalls who was not afraid to get his hands dirty and work diligently. Today this has not changed. And with this passion he in Hans Larsen’s opinion was exactly the right man to take over Skamstrup Maskinstation. A little bit later Torben Kamp bought another company with excavators, backhoe loaders etc. By now also trucks for transporting liquid manure, silage and other equipment are part of the business. This is why the company name was extended to Skamstrup Maskinstation & Entreprenør.

HORSCH is well represented

HORSCH makes up a large part of the well-stocked machinery. For tillage Skamstrup uses a compact disc harrow Joker 8 RT and a Terrano 6 MT. Maize is sown with a Maistro 12 RC and two Maestro 12.75 SW. These three machines achieve a hectare output of about 3,500 hectare per year.
For sowing cereals, rape and grass Skamstrup uses three Prontos – two Pronto 6 DC PPF and the “hectare killer” Pronto 8 DC G&F. Together the machines sow about 5,000 to 6,000 hectare per year – most of it in spring.
With regard to crop care Skamstrup relies on a new Leeb 12 TD with 24/36-m-boom.
Moreover, 35 tractors, 12 liquid manure barrels, 4 forage harvesters, 4 combines and 10 balers are also part of the machinery.

Torben Kamp bought his first HORSCH machine, a Maistro 11 RC, in 2005, even before he set up the contracting business on a large scale. He particularly likes the quality and the innovative technology of the HORSCH machines. And, of course, the good contact to the manufacturer and the commitment of the Danish HORSCH importer WekoAgro Machinery Torben Kamp has been working with for many years.

Well prepared for the future

The company employees 35 people – a lot of them have been working for the company for quite some years and thus contribute long-standing experience. An important point, also for the future for Torben Kamp is too have good and reliable employees and to bind them to the company. “In the contracting business we often have skewed working hours. This is why our employees get a fair salary and sometimes an extra bonus”, Torben Kamp explains. “We want that our employees‘ families feel that we support them”, he emphasises. “We see to it that our employees take time off as soon as the workload allows for it.
Torben Kamp‘s wife Lisbeth takes care of the administrative side of the company. The couple has one daughter and two sons. The latter work on other farms and study agriculture. Lisbeth and Torben are very happy that they share their enthusiasm for this job: “We are looking forward to further extending the business with our two sons. For we are an excellent team!”
Torben‘s strategy for the success of his company is quite simple: “Skamstrup will always be the farmers’ first choice and partner number one if we remain true to our motto: Quality is not a coincidence but the result of a determined effort!”
